Mrs. J. A. Walraven

The very many local friends of Mrs. Walraven were very shocked last week to read the notice of her death in this paper. The demise was a very sudden one, Mrs. Walraven dropping dead while at the dinner table of a friend in LeMars. The funeral was held here on last Friday, from the First Reformed church, Rev. E. W. Staplekamp officiating, and was very well attended. All the business houses in the city were closed during the ceremony at the church.

Deceased was born at Pella, this state, in October, 1864, her maiden name being Gysbertje Synhorst. She was married to John A. Walraven at Orange City in 1883, and the two have lived here ever since. There are no children, but two brothers, John Synhorst in Orange City, and Jake Synhorst at White Lake, S.D., and an uncle, Bart Synhorst, of Woodstock, Minn., were all here last Friday for the funeral. Mrs. Walraven had the respect of every person acquainted in the least with her, and it gives us great pain to be forced to chronicle her sad death.

But the Sioux County Herald the previous week (June 16, 1905) says:

News reaches the Herald at the time of going to press that Mrs. John Walraven is dead at the LeMars hospital. She underwent an operation there this morning and expired on account of a weakness of the heart. Relatives and friends here will be very disagreeably shocked at the unexpected news. Mr. Walraven goes to LeMars this afternoon.

And from the Alton Democrat, June 17, 1905:

Marshal Walraven was called to LeMars Wednesday afternoon by the sad intelligence that his wife had suddenly died. He was taken to Alton by Jake Vander Meide in the latter's automobile where he caught the three-thirty train for LeMars. Although Mrs. Walraven had been in poor health for some time her condition was not at all considered serious and the news of her death was a shock to her husband. Heart disease was the immediate cause of her death. The remains were brought up on the midnight train Wednesday night to Alton and thence to Orange City by team. The funeral was held this Friday afternoon.
