Mrs. John B. Kokenge died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Drees, January 30th, 1899, at the age of 74 years. Deceased was born at
Lohne, Oldenburg, Germany, on November 11, 1824, and her maiden name was Mary Anna Mairose, and
was united in the bonds of matrimony with Mr. John B. Kokenge in 1848. They came to America the
same year and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, and remained there for about eleven years, after which they settled at New Vienna in 1859.
Her husband died in 1863. She is survived by six children, Anton Kokenge of Mount Carmel, Henry Kokenge of Alton, Mrs. John Drees, Mrs. Henry Burlage and Mrs. Joseph Hoefer of Hickory Valley,
and Mrs. A. J. Hoefer of New Vienna.
The funeral took place Thursday morning at New Vienna and her earthly remains were laid to rest in St. Boniface cemetery, Rev. Father Pape officiating. Deceased was one of the pioneer ladies of this vicinity, coming here with her family when many parts were a wilderness. She
enjoyed the respect and esteem of large circle of friends, of whom many were present when she was carried to her last resting place.
