Mrs. Jennie Huygens, age 100, of Hospers, passed away on Thursday, December 1, 2011, at the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen.
There will be a funeral service on Monday, December 5, at 10:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Milton Sikkema will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hospers Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.
Jennie was born on August 19, 1911, at Hospers, the daughter of John and Jessie (Roos) Brink.
At the tender age of seven, her mother passed away, and she and her sister, Nellie, went to live with their maternal grandmother, Jane Roos, while her sister, Artie, went to live with an aunt and uncle in Hospers.
Jennie attended the Hospers public school through the eighth grade. She was an excellent student who loved school, but had to quit because of her aging grandmother, whom she continued to live with and care for until her marriage to the love of her life, James Carl Huygens.
Jim and Jennie were married on June 18, 1931, at Hospers. They made their home at Hospers, where she was a dedicated and loving wife and the mother of three children. J. C. passed away on June 22, 1993, in Sioux City, after 62 years of marriage.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty Mouw, and her husband, Roger, of Hospers; two sons, Larry Huygens, and his wife, Marge, of Sioux Center; and Jim Huygens, and his wife, Bonnie, of Orange City; six grandchildren and their spouses, Roma and Kevin Westra, of Dallas, Texas; Robin and Jose Ortega, of Orlando, Florida; Jami Huygens, of Galveston, Texas; Shane and Margaret Huygens, of Orlando; Michael and Robyn Huygens, of Rock Rapids; and Tom Huygens, of San Diego, California; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Nellie Luhrs and Artie Vander Pol.
