Alton Democrat, July 30, 1898

The many friends of Mrs. Lee Grant were greatly shocked and grieved to hear of her death last Saturday. Her health had been failing for some time until it was thought advisable to have an operation performed. Accordingly she went to St. Joseph's hospital at Sioux City for treatment on July 9th. She was unable to withstand the shock of the operation, and at 11 o'clock last Saturday morning death relieved her sufferings. Her remains were brought home on the midnight passenger and taken to the family residence southeast of town.

Mrs. Grant, nee Henrietta Barnes, was born at Guttenburg, Clayton County, Iowa, and was forty-seven years of age at the time of her death. In 1884 she was united in marriage with Herman Bohnekamp at Guttenburg, the home of her parents, and they immediately removed to Sioux County and invested largely in land interests, became prosperious and made many friends. In the summer of 1895 Mr. Bohnekamp met with an unfortunate accident which resulted in his death.

On November 17, 1896, she was married to Lee Grant and their union seemed to be an ideal and happy one. Surrounded by hosts of loving friends and all the earthly comforts at her disposal, her death seems most inopportune.

She was charitable and benevolent and the depths of her warm, cheerful and loving nature greatly endeared her to all with whom she came in contact.

She leaves to mourn her loss besided her husband, an adopted daughter, Caroline, eleven years of age, her mother Mrs. Barnes and four sisters, Mrs. John Walter of St. Cloud, MN, Mrs. X. Schaffer of Garnavillo, IA, Sister Constantine of Kewanee, WI, and another sister residing at Guttenberg, Iowa.

The funeral was held from St. Mary's church in this city last Monday morning, conducted by Rev. Father Brune, attended by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Interment in St. Mary's cemetery.

The Democrat extends sympathy and condolence to the sorrowing family and friends.

Those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Mrs. John Walter of St. Cloud, MN, Mr. & Mrs. X. Schaffer of Garnavillo, Theo, Bohnenkamp and family, Mr. & Mrs. John Ahmen of Remsen, Mr. & Mrs. Nic Klein, Mrs. Henry Wilper and Miss Van Bergen of Granville.
