DEAD FROM LOCK-JAW
R. D. Walter Is Suddenly Stricken Down
Was Upon the Streets Last Saturday and Passed Away Tuesday Morning

This community was saddened Tuesday morning [April 25] by the announcement of the sudden death of R. D. Walter, one of our oldest and most highly respected citizens, from lock-jaw. Mr. Walter was upon the streets of Hawarden Saturday in usual health and his sudden death came as a shock to all, as only a few of our citizens were aware of his illness. A couple of weeks ago Mr. Walter stepped upon a nail, but as it did not pain him to any extent at the time, nothing more was thought of the matter. It was not until late Saturday night that he complained of feeling badly and no one realized that his condition was serious until Monday morning when strong indications of tetanus set in. It was then too late for medical aid to avail and he passed away shortly after three o'clock Tuesday morning.

R. D. Walter was born in Collingwood, Ontario, Jan. 14, 1850. Sept. 18, 1870, he was married to Ann Jane Conn, who still survives him. Eight children were born to them, seven of whom are still living. The children are G. H. Walter, F. J. Walter, E. R. Walter, C. H. Walter and Mrs. Minnie Chatterton of this city and Mrs. Maggie Justman and Miss Libbie Walter of Chicago.

They moved to Hawarden in 1889 and have made their home in this city ever since. The deceased was a charter member of the Modern Woodman lodge of Hawarden, in which order he carried an insurance policy of $3,000. A few months ago he joined the Knights of Pythias lodge of this city. The funeral services will be held at the Methodist church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, under the auspices of the M.W.A. and K.P. lodges.

The deceased was a hard worker, an honorable and upright citizen and will be reatly missed by his large circle of friends. The Independent joins in extending condolances to the bereaved family who are left to mourn the loss of an indulgent husband and father.
