DeKraay, Henrietta "Etta" - 1886-1955

Miss Etta De Kraay passed away at the Grossmann Hospital, Orange City, Monday, Feb. 28, at the age of 68 years and eight months. She suffered a stroke the preceding Friday.

Henrietta De Kraay was born June 24, 1886 at Orange City, a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Herman De Kraay. She graduated from Orange City High School in 1904. Following her graduation, she taught in the Sioux county rural schools, then in Sioux Center and in Rapid City, SD. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Northern State Teachers College at Aberdeen, SD, where she taught and was elementary school principle for 30 years retiring in 1945. During her career she completed specialized training at Greely State Teachers College, University of Colorado, University of California, Harvard University and University of Wisconsin. She also taught in Orange City one year and again in Aberdeen one year following her formal retirement in 1945. The past six years she lived with her sister Kathryn in Orange City.

Surviving besides her sister Kathryn of Orange City are two sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, three nephews and two nieces. Her parents, three brothers and one sister preceded her in death, Harry of Rapid City, SD; Mrs. W. E. (Mayme) Vandenburgh of Milford; George of Orange City, and Henry of Sioux Center.

Services were held Wednesday afternoon at the American Reformed church with Rev. J. A. Veldman officiating. Special music by Mrs. Gerrit J. Slobe. Mrs. Ellsworth De Jong was organist, Pall bearers were Gerrit J. Slobe, Jacob Mouw, Nick Bogaard and Robert D. De Kraay, Orange City, Dale Vandenburg, Des Moines and Ray Gottsche, Milford. Interment was in the Orange City cemetery.

Final Rites Held For Miss Etta De Kraay

Retired Teacher Victim of Heart Attack Friday

Miss Etta De Kraay passed away at the Grossmann Hospital. Orange City, Monday, February 28th, at the age of 68 years and eight months. She suffered a stroke the preceding Friday. Services were held Wednesday afternoon at the American Reformed Church with Rev. J. A. Veldman . officiating. Special music was provided by Mrs. Gerrit J. Slobe. Mrs. Ellsworth De Jong was organist. Miss De Kraay was a member of the American Reformed Church and Treasurer of the Ladies Mission Aid Society. She also was active in the Woman’s Federated Club.
