Sioux Center News, February 20, 1958

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, February 19, at the First Christian Reformed Church of Rock Valley for John De Kam, 82, who died quiet suddenly Saturday afternoon about 3 p.m., after suffering a heart attack at his home in Rock Valley earlier that afternoon. He had not been well for over a year.

A brief service for the family was held at 1 p.m., immediately preceding the service at church. Rev. C. Huissen officiated at the services. Burial was made in Rock Valley cemetery, under the direction of Co-operative Funeral Service in Sioux Center.

Mr. De Kam was born in the Netherlands, August 24, 1875, and came to this country about 36 years ago. He and his wife farmed for many years, last in the Lebanon vicinity, before retiring and moving to Rock Valley about ten years ago.

He is survived by his widow; 13 children, Lena (Mrs. Peter De Roon) of Rock Valley, Annie (Mrs. John Van Beek) of Edgerton, MN; Elizabeth (Mrs. John Oostra) of Rock Valley; Frances (Mrs. Clarence Boer) of Rock Valley, Martena (Mrs. Ed Kragt) and Johanna (Mrs. Gys Bakker), both of Rock Valley, Katherine (Mrs. Leonard Groeneweg) of Rock Valley, Nellie (Mrs. Gys Bakker), of Chandler, MN, Peter of Sheldon, John of Edgerton, MN; Sam and Clarence of Rock Valley and Marvin of Rock Rapids; 60 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
