February 28, 1879---1958
Funeral services were held Wednesday in the First Reformed church of Orange City for Mrs. Sam De Jong, 78, who passed away at 2:30 am. Monday at the Grossman Hospital of Orange City. She had undergone surgery September 13 and had been failing in health since. She had been released to her home, but had returned to the hospital two weeks ago.
A brief service for the family was held in the Van Etten Funeral Home in Orange City, preceding the service at church. Rev. H. Colenbrander officiated at the services. Burial was made in the Orange City cemetery.
Mrs. De Jong, nee Rena Haarsma, was born, in the Netherlands. At the age of 8, she came to America. She was united in marriage to Sam De Jong December 16, 1896. Following their marriage, they lived on farms in Iowa and Minnesota, and in 1929 they retired in Orange City. Mr. De Jong passed away eight years ago.
Survivors include the following children: Peter, Sam and Arnold of Orange City, Robert, Frank and Fred of Chicago, Ill., and Jake of Estelline, S. D. Also surviving are 33 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Peter Menage, of Rock Rapids.
Preceding her in death, besides her husband, were two sons, Ray, age of 27, and Andrew, who died in 1912 at the age of 1½, and three sisters and two brothers.
