IRETON, IOWA- ANTHONY JAMES VER HOEVEN, 85, of rural Ireton, Iowa, died Friday,
January 16, 2009 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Reformed Church in Ireton, with Rev.
Doug Van Aartsen officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Anthony James Ver Hoeven was born January 14, 1924 at Middleburg, Iowa, the son of Jacob
and Kiasina (De Koning) Ver Hoeven. He attended rural school and graduated from the Ireton
High School in 1942.
Anthony served with the US Army during WWII and married Helen Poll on June 22, 1951.
Together they farmed in the Ireton area.
He was a member of the First Reformed Church where he served as the Sunday School Treasurer
and also as an Elder and Deacon for many years. He was a 4-H leader and served for 9 years on
the Farmer’s Coop Society board of directors. Anthony enjoyed fishing and being with his
family. Survivors include his wife, Helen; a daughter, Debra and her husband Ben Vander Kooi
of Luverne, Minnesota; son, James and his wife Glenda of Ireton; 2 grandchildren, Bill and
Katrina Vander Kooi; a sister, Dorothy Koopmans of Hawarden; 2 brothers, Don of Inwood,
Iowa and Clarence and wife Sadie of Hawarden; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy (Vernold) Ver
Hoeven Olson of Akron, Iowa.
Anthony was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Vera; 2 children; a sister, Loucella
Barents; a brother, Marvin; 2 brothers-in-law, Gary Barents and Bill Koopmans; and a sister-inlaw,
Marie Ver Hoeven.
