INTERMENT: Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley, Iowa
Gertrude was born September 3, 1908 in Groenegen, Holland. She was the daughter of Eilert and Fannie (Terpstra) Bakker. She came with the family to the U.S.A. to the Orange City, IA area when she was two years old. The family later farmed in the Doon, IA area. Gertrude married Samuel "Sam" Veltkamp on February 11, 1942 near Doon. Together the farmed near Doon until retirement when they moved to Rock Valley, IA in 1974. Sam died June 20, 1992. At Rock Valley Gertrude was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church. Gertrude died Saturday, October 25, 1997 at the Valley Manor at Rock Valley. She was 89.Surviving relatives include one son and his wife, Harlan and Sherrie Ve~Itkamp; one daughter and her husband, Faye and Dennis Medalen; 7 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren 12 great-grandchildren; 1 step-great-grandchild.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Germ, Cornie, and Nick Bakker; sisters, Bena Herema, Jennie Bloemendaal, Hattie Bloemendaal, Rena Calsbeek, Susan Bakker, Clara Vant Hul, and Martha Calsbeek.
