HARRY DE JONG,
MAURICE, DIES OF CANCER
1876-----1933
Henry De Jong, well known Maurice business man and trucker, passed away at his home early Tues day morning. The funeral will be held at 1:30 Thursday in the First Reformed Church of Maurice, Rev. Duiker and Rev. Straaks will officiate. The body will he interred in the family lot in the Orange City cemetery.
Mr. De Jong has been suffering from cancer for the past year and a half . A year ago last May he was operated on at Mayo Hospital in Rochester, Minn. The cancer at the time was concentrated in the voice box. A serious and delicate operation was performed, the voice box was entirely removed. The cancer was retarded and he used a small reed pipe to speak with. Unfortunately the cancer broke out again and this time beyond help. Never-the-less Mr. De Jong was up on his feet and working until about two months ago. His decline was rapid during the last weeks.
Surviving Mr. De Jong are his widow, three daughters, one son, one brother, and three sisters. One daughter, Mrs. Herman Dirks of Buffalo, N.Y. and his brother John De Jong of Montreal, Canada, were the only close relatives not present during the final illness.
Mr. and Mrs. De Jong have lived in Maurice since their marriage. During that time he has been in several successful business enterprises. He has been in a hardware and furniture store, has owned and operated the local telephone and light Company, during the past years he has operated a truck line. At the time of his death Mr. De Jong was 55 (?) years old.
