VANVELDHUIZEN, VANDERMAATEN

William Van Veldhuizen, 79, passed away at the Doornink hospital Oct. 31 where he had been a patient for 9 months. Death was due to hardening of the arteries.

Mr. Van Veldhuizen was a native of Michigan and came to Sioux County at the age of 2. He lived in this vicinity all his life, farming near Newkirk and Orange City. On March 19, 1891 he married Fannie Vander Maaten of Orange City. She passed away in March, 1941. Mr. and Mrs. Van Veldhuizen came to Orange City in 1926 to reside. Of late years he made his home with his daughter, the John K. Ver Steeg family.

Surviving are the following children: Gertie, Mrs. Wm. D. Lammers of Sheldon; Andrew at Hospers; Wilhelmina, Mrs. A. G. Freese of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Jennie, Mrs. J. K. Ver Steeg. Also sister, Mrs. Lane Vander Bosch of Rock Valley and Mrs. Ike Herwynen of Orange City and a brother, Henry Van Veldhuizen.

Preceding him in death were a daughter in infancy and a son, Jake Van Veldhuizen who passed away in September of 1919, of the after effects of a lung injury by gas used in World War I.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 3 at the John K. Ver Steeg home at 1 p.m. and at the Trinity Ref. church at 1:30. Burial was made at Newkirk.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index shows William Van Veldhuizen, born 22 January 1870, died 31 October 1949, buried in Newkirk Cemetery.

Similar obituaries were published in the Sioux Center News (Nov. 10) and the Sioux County Capital (Nov. 3). They add: Although very poorly his death was unexpected. He was receiving his supper when he suddenly became ill and he died within a few minutes.
