Gysbert Van Veldhuizen
June 21, 1901--April 23, 2001

SANBORN--Gysbert "Guy" Artinus Van Veldhuizen, 99, Sanborn, died Monday, April 23, at Prairie View Retirement Home in Sanborn. Services were Wednesday, April 25, at First Reformed Church at Sheldon, with the Rev. David Brower officiating. Burial was at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, under the direction of Sanborn Funeral Home.

Gysbert Van Veldhuizen, son of Gysbertus and Aarje[Aartje] (Vander Sanden) Van Veldhuizen, was born June 21, 1901, in Ede, in the province of Gelderland, in the Netherlands. He was the sixth of nine children. The family moved to the United States when he was 6. The Van Veldhuizens' first stay was in Sioux Center, where his father worked s a farmhand for the first year. They then moved to Hull and then to a farm northeast of Middleburg. They lived on that place for five years. He attended a one-room country school one-half mile south. His father was killed in an accident with a horse when Gysbert was 11. They lived on farms at Allendorf, Bigelow, MN, and Sanborn. Later, he purchased a farm northwest of Hospers, where his mother lived with him until her death in 1950. He entered Prairie View Retirement Home in Sanborn on Jan. 24, 2000.

He was a member of First Reformed Church in Sheldon. He will be remembered for the enjoyment he received from his Lowery organ, his fruit trees, his dogs, his cars, politics, hunting, taking snapshots, and visits with his nephews, nieces and neighbors.

Survivors include two sisters, Nell Boterhock of Orange City and Johanna Prins of Sanborn; two sisters-in-law, Josina Van Veldhuizen of Sheldon and Margaret Van Veldhuizen of Northwood; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Evert, John, Garett, Henry, and Ben; and a half-sister, Martha Kuiper.
