A Fatal Accident

The people of this vicinity were greatly shocked Tuesday evening [July 23] to hear of the fatal accident that happened to Gysbertus Veldhuizen, a prosperous farmer living 5 1/2 miles southwest of Boyden, in Capel township.

We have been informed that he was assisting his boy on a horse to send him to a neighbor in regard to help with his binder and the horse in some way thru the boy off and in turning around quickly the horse knocked Mr. Veldhizen[sic] to the ground and with its hind feet stepped on his chest and stomach. The ribs were crushed and he died at 11 p.m. three hours after the accident.

He leaves a wife and nine children this being his second wife. He and his family had been in America about four years.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 12 o'clock noon, from the house and 1:30 from the Holland church in Middleburg. Interment will be made in Middleburg Cemetery.

His son Gysbert's obituary (Northwest Iowa Review, April 23, 1901) gives the family surname as Van Veldhuizen and Gysbertus's wife as Aarje (Vander Sanden) Van Veldhuizen.

News notes about the accident also appear in the Alton Democrat (July 27, 1912) and the Sioux Center Nieuwsblad (July 31, 1912). They give no substantive additional details.
