Joel Brian Van Veldhuizen, 18, rural Rock Valley, Iowa died Sunday, November 11, 1990 from injuries received in a two-car accident east of Rock Valley.

He was born June 13, 1972 in Rock Rapids, Iowa. He was a junior at the Netherlands Reformed Christian School of Rock Valley and worked as a farm hand in the area.

Survivors include his parents, Arie and Hermina Van Veldhuizen of rural Rock Valley; two brothers: James, Rock Valley, and Robert at home; three step brothers: Harlan Spaans, Corsica, S.D.; David Spaans, Orange City, Ia.; and Larry Spaans of Rock Valley; eight sisters: Mrs. John (Susan) Bauder, Worthington, Minn.; Mrs. Richard (Kerry) Spitler of Greeley, Colo.; Mrs. Peter (Ardyce) Den Boer, The Colony, Texas; Mrs. Kenneth (Jane) Van Hill, Alvord, Ia.; Mrs. Gary (Julie) Klarenbeek, Florissant, Mo.; Mrs. Alan (Avis) Bakker of Hull, Ia.; Mrs. Thomas (Paula) Maassen, Inwood, Iowa; and Rebecca Van Veldhuizen, at home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Rus of Corsica, S.D.

Services will be held today, Wednesday, November 14, 1990 at 2:00 p.m. at the Netherlands Reformed Church of Rock Valley, Ia. with the Rev. John den Hoed officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery. Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A front page article in the same issue of the Rock Valley Bee reports on the fatal accident. A car driven by Van Veldhuizen slid out of control into the path of an oncoming car driven by Pamela Diedrich of Conrad, Montana. He, his passenger Michael Van Otterloo, and all three occupants of Diedrich's car were all killed. The article includes a photograph of the wrecked cars.
