Clarence Van Wechel, 92, of Grinnell died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the Carman Center of the Mayflower Home in Grinnell. The Rev. Bob Molsberry, pastor of the Grinnell U.C.C.-Congregational officiated. The body was cremated and burial will be held at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton under the direction of the Smith Funeral Home.

Clarence was born Dec. 8, 1907, in Sioux Center, the son of Allen and Wilhelmina (Muilenburg) Van Wechel. He was raised in Orange City and was a graduate of Orange City High School. After his education he was employed with the Sioux County Engineers for 15 years. He married Sylvia Boeyink June 17, 1932, in Nebraska. The couple lived in Orange City prior to moving to Vinton in 1941, where he was employed with Cambier-Van Wechel Motors. In 1946, he moved to Manchester and owned and operated Van Wechel Motors. He moved to Grinnell in 1959, and was employed with Van Wechel Motors, owned by his brother, Mel. He retired in 1971, and spent winters in McAllen, Tex. and summers in Deer River, Minn. He returned to Grinnell in 1995 and resided at the Mayflower Home.

Mr. Van Wechel was a member of the Lions Club and Knights of Pythias.

Survivors include two sisters, Helen Van Wechel and Geraldine postma, both of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; five brothers, Raymond, Kenneth, Melvin, Verlan and Lloyd; and a sister, Mildred Lindquist.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society and U.C.C.-Congregational in Grinnell.
