Sylvia J. Van Wechel
March 23, 1911--March 1, 1996

Sylvia J. Van Wechel, 84, of Grinnell died of cancer Friday, March 1, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.

A memorial service was Tuesday, March 5, at 11 a.m. in the Social Center of the Mayflower Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Robert Molsberry, pastor of the United Church of Christ-Congregational of Grinnell, officiating. Burial was at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery at Vinton.

Mrs. Van Wechtel was born March 23, 1911, at Sioux Center to John and Clara Muilenburg Boeyink. She was raised in Sioux Center and graduated from Sioux Center High School. Following high school, she received a teaching certificate and taught rural school east of Sioux Center. She married Clarence Van Wechtel in Nebraska on June 17, 1932. The couple lived in Orange City until 1941, when they moved to Vinton. From 1945 to 1959 they operated Van Wechtel Motor Company in Manchester and from 1959 to 1972 they operated Van Wechtel Motor Company in Grinnell with his brother Melvin Van Wechtel. Following retirement, the couple wintered in McAllen, Texas, and they spent the summer near Deer River, Minnesota. They moved to the Mayflower Home in Grinnell in 1995.

She was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational and was a deaconess of the church. She was also a member of PEO in McAllen and Grinnell.

Survivors include her husband.
