Veteran Merchant Called Beyond
Mr. Sam Van Vliet, veteran Orange City business man, died at a local hospital Tuesday morning [April 18] at 9 o'clock after an illness of several months. He was doing well until he contracted the flu when he entered the hospital about 2 weeks ago and up to a few hours of his death appeared to be improving. His death was a shock to the community. Funeral services, to be held the latter part of the week, were pending awaiting word from relatives on the Pacific coast, and will be at the home and First Christian Reformed church.

Death Calls Sam Van VlietSam Van Vliet, who died April 18 at the age of 65 from complications of the flu and a stroke, learned the baker's trade in the Netherlands when only 11 years of age. He was born at Visch Vliet and came to this country when 21 years of age, locating at Sioux Center. He married Miss Alice Feikema there and later moved to Orange City to work as baker for the Vander Aarde & De Vries firm. In 1911 he and Charles R. Mulder formed a partnership and established the firm of Van Vliet & Mulder, for many years a well known store and after 17 years opened the Superb store. The firm dissolved partnership in 1928, Mr. Van Vliet continuing the Superb store until he sold the business in 1934. Since that time, he has managed a store in the Sas building.
Mrs. Van Vliet died in 1926 and he later married Mrs. Kate Peters who, with his three children -- Mrs. Peter Van Houten of Byron Center, Mich., Tony Van Vliet of Orange City, and Mrs. Bernard Scholten of Hull -- survives him. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, two brothers in the Netherlands, and 5 stepchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the First Christian Reformed church, following a short service at the home. Rev. R. Bronkema, the pastor, was in charge of the services for the pioneer business man, well known for his honesty, fairness and square dealing.

Death Takes Local Merchant
Sam Van Vliet, 66, Orange City merchant passed away at the Doornink hospital Tuesday, April 18, at 9 o'clock a.m. from complications following a stroke which he suffered last December. He was born at Visch Vliet, The Netherlands and at the age of eleven years he learned the bakers trade. He worked at Dockum and Leeuwaarden and at the age of 21 he came to America. He located at Sioux Center where he was married to Miss Alice Feikema. Soon after their marriage the couple moved to Orange City where he obtained employment with the Vander Aarde and De Vries firm.
On February 1, 1911 he formed a partnership with Chas. R. Mulder and bought the Vander Aarde Bakery and Grocery store. This partnership continued for 17 years under the firm name of Van Vliet and Mulder. In 1923 they opened the Suberb Store. Five years later they dissolved partnership, Mr. Van Vliet retaining the Superb store. He sold out in 1934 and has since then operated a grocery store in the Sas building.
Mrs. Van Vliet died in 1926 and in 1927 he was married to Mrs. Kate Peters who survives him. [Followed by names of other survivors and information on funeral services.] Interment will be made in the Orange City cemetery.

OBITUARY
S. Van VlietHULL.--Mr. S. Van Vliet died on Tuesday morning at 9:00 o'clock at Doornink's hospital, Orange City, after an illness of four and one-half months.
Born June 17, 1872 at Visvliet, Gronigen, Netherlands, he came to America in 1895. Lived at Sioux Center. He was married March 16, 1896 to Miss Alice Feikema. 3 children were born to this union: (Catherine) Mrs. P. Van Houten, Byron Center, Mich.; Tony, Orange City; (Margaret) Mrs. B. Scholten, Hull. They then moved to Orange City in 1901. Mrs. Van Vliet died in 1926.
Mr. Van Vliet married Mrs. Kate Peters on Sept. 14, 1927, who survives him with the three afore mentioned children and 5 stepchildren & several grandchildren. Also 2 brothers, Cornelius and Laurence in the Netherlands.
He suffered a stroke on Dec. 3, 1938 from which he failed to recover.
Funeral services were held from the Christian Reformed church in orange City in charge of Rev. Bronkema.
