Kuipers, Matilda, Mrs. Isaac, 1913-1988

Mrs. Matilda Kuipers, age 75, of Hull, passed away Monday, Feb. 1, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital. Funeral services were held Thursday, Feb. 4, at the First Reformed Church of Hull, with the Rev. Gerald Vander Velde and Mr. Daniel Van Houten officiating.

Matilda was born Jan. 16, 1913, at Hull, the daughter of Gradus Van Der Vliet and Johanna Beyer Van Der Vliet. On June 27, 1934, she married Isaac Kuipers at Hull. They farmed at Hull until 1961, when they moved into town. They then served as custodians of the First Reformed Church and also operated Holiday Laundromat. They retired in 1974. On Jan. 18, 1980, Mr. Kuipers passed away.

Mrs. Kuipers was [a] member of the First Reformed Church and Reformed Church Women. She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and she served as a foster grandparent for Hope Haven.

Survivors include her five children, Mrs. Howard (Gertrude) Te Slaa and Gradus, both of Hull; Gerrit, of Jasper, Minn.; Mrs. Vernon (Hermina) Hamann, of Rock Valley and Mrs. Richard (Karen) Dykstra, of Worthington, Minn.; sixteen grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren; and six brothers and sisters, Herman Van Der Vliet and Mrs. Bernard (Henrietta) Meendering, both of Hull; Mrs. Gerrit (Annetta) Ter Maat, of Hickman, Neb.; Mrs. Henry (Bernice) Vink, of Colton, S.D.; Henry John Van Der Vliet, of Brea, Cal.; and Stanley Van Der Vliet, of Colton.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three grandchildren and sister Julia Bylsma.

Similar obituaries appeared in the Rock Valley Bee (Feb. 10) and Sioux Center News (Feb. 10). They note that she was buried in Hope Cemetery, Hull.

The 1925 Iowa census has her as a daughter of Gradus and Harriet Vander Vliet. Harriet was Gradus' second wife (see his obituary, Sioux County Index, Aug. 26, 1948).
