W. A. Evans of Chatsworth, 78, well known throughout this entire community, passed away at the Hawarden hospital at 9:30 Sunday morning. Mr. Evans suffered a stroke on May 18 and was brought immediately to the hospital, where he remained until his death.

William Alfred Evans was born on September 24, 1866 at Ridgeway, Wis. where he grew to manhood. He came to Chatsworth in 1900 and operated a creamery. He was united in marriage with Adele Westfall of Sioux City on November 11, 1902. Later he moved to Gettysburg, SD, where he also operated a creamery, after which he moved to Houghton, SD, and for two years was engaged in the same business there.
In 1909, he returned to Chatsworth and bought grain for three years. In 1912 he moved to McNally, where he was manager of the Farmers Co-Operative elevator until 1933, when he retired and returned to Chatsworth. He took an active part in public life in Chatsworth and served as mayor for a number of years. During the past few years he was on the town council, but resigned this position when his health began to fail him. He was a member of the Associated Church of Hawarden.
He was the father of four children, one of whom died in infancy. He is survived by his wife, and three children. They are Frank Evans of Hastings, Neb.; Mrs. John Dannerbring of Long Beach, Calif.; and Lieut. Helen Evans of Oakland, Calif; also two sisters, Mrs. Etta Harrington and Margaret Evans of Sioux City. There are four grandchildren.
Lieut. Evans came to see her father shortly after he suffered a stroke and spent several days here. Mrs. Dannenbring had hoped to come to see her father, but was unable to get a reservation until July, so was not even able to come for the funeral.
