Orange City Capital, June 28, 1990

Leona Vander Stoep Ypma Esteb died of a massive heart attack at the La Jolla, Cal. home where she had lived for 52 years. She was 77.

Born and educated in Orange City, she graduated from the Sioux City (Iowa) Beauty College and went to San Diego in 1935.

She owned and operated the Arcade Beauty Shop in La Jolla, from 1937 until she sold the shop in 1946. She worked in the Silverado Beauty Shop from 1946 to 1977. She continued her occupation in her home until she died.

She married William Ypma on Jan. 19, 1936, the year before she opened her own shop. He was a 1928 granduate of La Jolla High School and a 1932 graduate of Northwestern College. They were married in La Jolla Presbyterian Church, where they were members. Both sang in the church chancel choir until his death in 1972.

She was a member of the church for 55 years, and was active in church organizations, including the women's association. She assisted in writing and periodically updating the church history. She was a supporter of the sacred music series.

She and Fulton E. Esteb were married in the church 11 years ago.

Survivors include her husband, Fulton E. Esteb; two daughters, Janet Evans and Mary Louis Phillips, both of La Jolla; two sisters and a brother, Marie Pas of Oceanside, Verna Miller of Escondido and Kenneth Vander Stoep of Homeland; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service was held in the La Jolla Presbyterian Church.
