Mrs. Harriet Van Der Vliet, 89, of Hull died Sunday, Dec. 21 at a nursing home in Hull. Services were held Wednesday at the Hull Community Building. The Rev. Jeff Seekins and Ed Kaltenback officiated. Burial was at Hope Cemetery in Hull under the direction of the Kraai-Oolman Funeral Home of Hull.

Harriet was born June 2, 1897 at Sioux Center, the daughter of Henry Spinden and Henrietta Heemstra Spinden. On Dec. 15, 1919 she married Gradus Van Der Vliet at Hull. They farmed in the Hull area. He died on Aug. 15, 1948.

In 1960, she moved into Hull. She spent the last three weeks at Pleasant Acres [Nursing Home]. She had been a school teacher in the Hull and Sioux Center area. For 12 years, she was involved with the Grandparent program at Hope Haven in Rock Valley. She was a member of the Grace Community Church of Sioux Falls, S.D.

Survivors include three sons, Herman of Hull; Henry John of Brea, Calif.; and Stanley of Coulton, S.D.; four daughters, Mrs. Mathilda Kuipers and Mrs. Bernard (Henrietta) Meendering, both of Hull; Mrs. Gerrit (Annetta) Ter Maat of Hickman, Neb.; and Mrs. Henry (Bernice) Vink of Colton, S.D.; 37 grandchildren, 89 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Julia Bylsma, one grandson, and 12 brothers and sisters.
