Josephine "Jo" Van Vugt, 93, of Orange City died Sunday, May 28, at Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.
Memorial services were at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Dover Avenue Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Orange City with the Rev. C. Orville Kool officiating. Burial was in West Lawn Cemetery.
Van Vugt was born March 13, 1913, in Westfield, North Dakota, the daughter of Arie and Deana (Te Beest) Stam. She was raised in Westfield, where she attended a country school. On November 17, 1932, she married Peter A. "Pete" Van Vugt in Westfield. They made their home in North Dakota, Minnesota, and Oklahoma. In 1957, they moved to Orange City. Besides being a homemaker, she also worked in the housekeeping department of the Heritage House from 1968 to 1978. In 1993, they became residents of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. He died September 17, 1999, in Orange City.
She was a member of Dover Avenue Alliance Church, where she participated in the Women's Missionary Fellowship.
Survivors include two sons, Jim Van Vugt of Jacinto, California, and Willard Van Vugt and his wife Mary of Orange City; two daughters and their husbands, Beverly and Arend Schreur of Sioux City and Norma and Jack Stander of Orange City; a former daughter-in-law, Harriet Caballes of Hemet, California; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by an infant son, Arlin; a grandson; two infant granddaughters; and three sisters and their husbands, Anna and Andrew Zandstra, Dorothy and Gerrit Rowerdink and Janet and John Van Vugt.
