Peter A. Van Vugt, 87, of Orange City died Friday, September 17, at Orange City Municipal Hospital.
Memorial services were at 11 a.m. Monday at Dover Avenue Alliance Church in Orange City with the Revs. Paul Frederick and C. Orville Kool officiating. Burial was prior to the service in West Lawn Cemetery.
Van Vugt was born June 11, 1912, in Hull, North Dakota, the son of Arie and Nellie (Groen) Van Vugt. He was raised in Hull. He married Josephine Stam on November 17, 1932, in Westfield, North Dakota. The couple lived in North Dakota, Minnesota, Oklahoma and since 1957 in Orange City. He was employed as a farmer, road construction worker, mechanic and welder. He was last employed with Sioux Automation in Sioux Center. During his retirement, he repaired lawn mowers. They entered Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City in 1993. He transferred to Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City in February 1996.
He was a member of Dover Avenue Alliance Church, where he served as an elder, deacon, Sunday school teacher and mission treasurer. He also served on the board of directors for Pioneer Memorial Home. He enjoyed reading.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Jim and Harriet of Temecula, California, and Willard and Mary of Orange City; two daughters and their husbands, Beverly and Arend Schreur of Sioux City and Norma and Jack Stander of Orange City; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jake of Arizona and Gerrit of Michigan; and three sisters, Ann Smits of Illinois, Winnie Rowerdink of North Dakota and Helen Tschritter of Michigan.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, two infant granddaughters and three brothers, Bill, John and Ernest.
