Funeral services were held Monday, February 27, at 1:30 p.m. in the church basement and at 2:00 p.m. at the First Reformed Church in Boyden, for Mr. Joe Van Velzen. The Rev. Henry G. Schoon was in charge of the services. Interment was in the Boyden cemetery with arrangements by Temple funeral home of Sheldon.

Pallbearers were Peter De Boor, John Casemier, Bert Engelsman, Chester Sitter, Arthur Kreulen and Wm. Humme. A Men's Quartet from the church sang "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and "Beyond the Sunset." Mrs. Case Slothouber was the organist. In charge of flowers was Mrs. John Casemier and Mrs. Wm. Rons.

Joe Van Velzen was born August 11, 1896, in The Netherlands, son of the late Cornelius and Antje Van Egmond-Van Velzen, and passed away Saturday, February 25, 1961, at 4:30 a.m. at the Sheldon hospital, at the age of 64 years, 6 months and 14 days, following an illness due to a collapsed lung.

Mr. Van Velzen came to this country when a boy. On March 19, 1925 he was married to Elizabeth Van Veldhuizen. They lived at Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Sioux Center, Middleberg, Rock Valley and Hull and for the past twenty-five years made their home in Boyden. He was a cream hauler for the Boyden Co-op Creamery for 21 years, and the faithful custodian at the First Reformed Church of Boyden the past 11 years. He was also a member of the Church and the Men's Brotherhood.

In the year 1918 he served with the Army in World War I and was a member of the local Wm. Monster American Legion Post No. 272.

Mr. and Mrs. Van Velzen were the parents of two sons and one daughter: Henry John of Matlock; Clarence Eugene of Le Mars and Joan Lois, Mrs. Cornie Siebersma, of Sheldon.

Mr. Van Velzen leaves to mourn his widow, his children, five grandchildren, three sisters and two brothers: Cornelia, Mrs. Henry Jansen; Marie, Mrs. John Van Osbree and Martha, Mrs. Eshuis and Wm. Van Velzen, all of Sioux Center and Peter Van Velzen of Sioux Falls, besides a host of other relatives.
