Nellie Van Zanten, 92, died Thursday, November 16, at Valley Manor, Rock Valley. Memorial service was 11 a.m., Tuesday at First Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Burial was at Valley View Cemetery.

Mrs. Van Zanten was born August 17, 1914, to Evert and Hattie (Drok) Blankespoor in Sioux Center. She grew up on a farm south of Rock Valley and attended country school. She married Cornelius "Case" E. Van Zanten on July 21, 1955, and lived on a farm northwest of Rock Valley. After his death on September 20, 1965, she moved to Rock Valley and worked as a residential trainer at Hope Haven for 18 years.

She was an active member of First Reformed Church, serving over the years as young adult leader, Sunday school and catechism teacher and member of the Ladies Guild. She was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed riding her bicycle around town, quilting, gardening, working crossword puzzles, playing scrabble and other games.

Survivors include her daughters, Albertha (Richard) Vander Zee of South Holland, Illinois, Helen (Don) Hemmes of Hilo, Hawaii, Clarene (David) Cress, M.D., of Rochester, New York, and Evelyn Van Zanten of Tooele, Utah; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Hattie Bakker of Inwood; sisters-in-law, Edith and Gertrude Blankespoor, both of Inwood; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two grandsons; a sister, Coba Van Zanten; brothers, Henry Blankespoor and Maas John Blankespoor; and brother-in-law, Dock Bakker.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Case; 2 grandsons; sister, Coba Van Zanten; brothers, Henry Blankespoor and Maas John Blankespoor; brother-in-law, Dick Bakker.
