Florinda Jernberg, 85, of Hawarden died Wednesday, Dec. 29, at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden. Funeral service was Jan. 3 at the First Baptist Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Stuart Schreur officiating. Burial of the cremated remains was in Big Springs Baptist Cemetery, rural Alcester. Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden was in charge of arrangements.

Florinda Jernberg was born April 14, 1919, in Union County, S.D., the daughter of Oscar and Emma (Olson) Jernberg. She was baptized Sept. 28, 1930, at Big Springs Baptist Church by Rev. B. L. Carlton. Florinda graduated from Alcester High School in 1936 and received her R.N. [registered nurse] degree from Proctor Hospital in Peoria, Ill. in 1942. She was employed in Peoria until 1949, when she returned home to take care of her parents until 1956. She worked at the Hawarden Community Hospital from 1956 to 1984.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she served as a Deaconess for six years. She volunteered at the Hawarden Senior Citizens and the Hillcrest Health Care Center and served as a board member of the Care Review Committee for many years.

She is survived by a foster brother, Jerry Peterson of New Braunfils, Texas; a special friend Toni Schlumbohm and husband Bart and family of Hawarden; nieces and nephews; and great nephews and great nieces.

She was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Jernberg and Rodney Jernberg and sister-in-law Merna Jernberg.
