Sioux County Capital, February 15, 1945

Mrs. John Vanden Berge, Sr., nee Christina Christianson, passed away at the Methodist Hospital in Sioux City Saturday, February 10, at 8:05 in the evening. She was well the Sunday before last, and her married daughters, who spent the day in the parental home, enjoyed a visit with her. On Wednesday morning she was taken ill, and brought to a local hospital. She was moved Friday noon in the Van Etten ambulance to the Sioux City Hospital, where she died the following day.

Mrs. Vanden Berge was born April 30, 1870 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and came to America with her parents at the age of 18. They settled near Carnes.

She was married to John Vanden Berge of Carnes, who survives her, on April 25, 1890.

Surviving besides her husband is a son John Jr. of Orange City, and six daughters, Birdena (Mrs. Cornelius Vogelaar, Jr.) of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Christena (Mrs. Wm. Druyvesteyn) of Hospers; Mrs. Marie Eggink, and Martha (Mrs. Matt Schafer) both of Sioux City; Alice (Mrs. Harry Wallinga) of Hull, and Maybelle (Mrs. Oren Van Iperen) of George. A daughter, Evelyn Mae passed away at the age of 22, July 9, 1931.

There are 19 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She is also survived by 3 sisters, Mrs. J. H. McAninch and Mrs. Robert Gamble, both of Hawarden, and Mrs. Anna Dirks of Akron.

Funeral services will be held Thursday (today) at 1 p.m., at the home at Carnes, and at 2 p.m., in the American Reformed Church of Orange City, with Rev. H. Vande Brake and Rev. Wm. Meyer, the latter of Sioux City, officiating. Interment will be made in the Alton Cemetery.
