E. J. ERICSON DIED SUNDAY
SUCCUMBED TO STROKE WHICH HE SUFFERED DEC. 28TH
Was 87 Years Old and Had Lived in This Community for 67 Years.--Leaves Eight Children

E. J. Ericson, a pioneer resident of this community, passed away at the Hawarden hospital at 3 o'clock Sunday morning following a stroke which he suffered at his home in this city the evening of Dec. 28th. While it was known at the time he was stricken that his condition was critical he rallied and at times hopes were held for his recovery but due to his advanced age and complications which developed he was unable to overcome the illness and he passed away quietly Sunday morning.

Funeral services were held at the home at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon with Rev. Clyde Clark of the Baptist church in charge. Interment was made beside his wife in Grace Hill cemetery.

Eric John Ericson was born in Narke, Orebro Lan, Sweden, Jan. 4, 1851, and passed away at Hawarden Jan. 23, 1938, so had just passed his 87th birthday. At the age of 18 years he emigrated to the United States, locating first in Michigan and later at Northwood, Iowa. In 1871 he came to this vicinity, homesteading several miles southwest of Hawarden in Union county. He was united in marriage with Josephine Bostrom at Big Springs Nov. 28, 1885, and to this union were born eight children, all of whom survive him. His wife preceded him in death June 7, 1935. He was reared in the Lutheran church and remained faithful to that faith throughout his life.

In 1902 he retired from farming and came to Hawarden, locating in the west part of the city, in order that his children might have better educational advantages. He continued to make his home there until 1918 when he built a lovely residence across the way from his old home and he lived there continuously since that time. Since the death of his wife, his daughter, Miss Hulda Ericson, made a home for him and tenderly looked after his needs. Henry Ericson was also taken into the home at the death of Mrs. Ericson and was regarded as a member of the family.

The children are Miss Hulda and Elmer Ericson of Hawarden; Misses Della and Anna Ericson of Sioux Falls; Herbert of Des Moines; Mrs. Robert Paramore of Chicago; Mrs. Fred Warren of Indianapolis, Ind., and Mrs. Chas. V. Broadley of New York City. He is also survived by one brother, A. M. Ericson of Princeton, Minn., and by nine grandchildren.

Mr. Ericson enjoyed excellent health for a man of his years and was active throughout his entire life. Even the day when he was fatally stricken he had been up town and had just returned home and was attending to some duty in the basement of his home when he suffered the stroke. He was an upright and honest man and won the esteem of a large circle of friends throughout his long life in this community. It was in his home that his true nature was revealed to the utmost and it was his family that he lived for. One of his desires was that his children receive good educations as he considered this a great investment and he lived to see this wish fulfilled. He was a kind and indulgent father and he was happiest when surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Paramore of Chicago, Mrs. Fred Warren of Indianapolis, Ind., Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Ericson of Des Moines, Misses Della and Anna Ericson of Sioux Falls, David Lily of Westfield and Mr. and Mrs. Randall Karr, Mrs. Alvin Karr and Edw. C. Karr of Ireton.
