Helen Beth Oolman
June 30, 1951 - October 3, 2011
Mrs. Helen Oolman, age 60, of Orange City, passed away on Monday October 3, 2011, at her farm home.
There will be a funeral service on Thursday, October 6, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Maurice. The Rev. Donald De Kok and the Rev. Harlan De Jong will officiate. Interment will follow at the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice. Visitation will be after 1:00pm on Wednesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Helen Beth was born on June 30, 1951, in Le Mars, the daughter of Henry and Hattie (Dykstra) Dykstra. She was raised in Le Mars and Sioux Center, where she attended the public schools, graduating from the Sioux Center High School in 1969. She also attended the Le Mars Beauty College for a year.
On May 28, 1971, she married Roger Wayne Oolman in Maurice. After five months near Fort Riley in Kansas while Roger finished serving in the military, the couple made their home on a farm northwest of Orange City. Besides being a homemaker, in earlier years, she was a cosmetologist in Hospers, Sioux Center, and at home.
Helen was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she participated in the women’s ministries, taught Sunday school, and catechism classes, assisted with preparing food during vacation Bible school, and attended couples’ club. She preferred to work behind the scenes, helping in the church kitchen and serving juice after Sunday morning worship for years. She was known for sending greeting cards to many people for all occasions.
On April 20, 2001, she suffered a severe stroke, but with a lot of determination, she overcame many obstacles. She and her family were blessed with ten years and five months more to enjoy each other, their friends, and especially the children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of more than forty years, "Rog"; four children and their spouses and eight grandchildren, Brian and Kim Oolman, and their children, Breanna and Austin; Brent and Tara Oolman, and their children, Conner and Kelsey; Amy and Terry Aberson, and their children, Tyler, Ashlyn, and Alex; and Eric and Jessica Oolman, and their son, Brayden, all of Orange City; a brother and his wife, Harold and Carla Dykstra, of Hudson, South Dakota; Roger’s three brothers and two sisters and their spouses; Dennis and Pat Oolman, Sondra and Rodney De Groot, Doug and Marge Oolman, and Jane and Harlan Wielenga, all of Orange City; and Robert and Jeanine Oolman, of Alton; and many nephews and nieces.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant sister, Glenda Dykstrta.
