Mrs. Josephine "Jo" Wielenga, age 88, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, September 30, 2011, at the Orange Area City Health System Long Term Care Facility.
There will be a memorial service on Monday, October 3, at 2:30p.m., at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Monday, at 1:30p.m., at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will be after 5:00p.m. on Sunday, with the family present from 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m., at the funeral home.
Josephine Elnora was born on April 10, 1923, at Orange City, the daughter of Bert J. and Bessie (Tiemersma) Vande Brake. She was raised in the Sioux Center area, where she graduated from high school. She also attended Westmar College in LeMars. During World War II, she worked at the Pentagon in Washington, D. C. Later she was a school teacher.
On June 30, 1950, she married Louis N. J. Wielenga in Orange City. They farmed at Orange City, where she continued to teach school, until her son was born. Then she became a full-time homemaker. Lou passed away on July 21, 2000, in Orange City.
Jo was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she participated in the women’s activities. She especially enjoyed the Knots and Blocks Quilters and Coffee Break. She liked playing cards, quilting, playing piano, and reading.
Survivors include her two daughters and their husbands, Linda and Wally Valentine and Janna and Allan Bolkema, both of Sioux Center; a daughter-in-law, Evonne Wielenga, of Maurice; eleven grandchildren, Jill (husband, Rick) Schouten, Jeff (wife, Sara) Wielenga, Darren Wielenga (fiancé, Ashley Schutt), Jodi Wielenga, Jamey (wife, Rachel) Valentine, Emilee (husband, Matthew) Gregory, Teri (husband, Mike) Ratigan, Wade (wife, Jasmine) Valentine, Elizabeth Bolkema, Jonathan Bolkema, and Sara (husband, Joel) Vande Griend; thirteen great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bill Vande Brake, Mick (wife, Betty) Vande Brake, and David (wife, Kathy) Vande Brake; and two sisters, Floss Gunderson and Marla (husband, Del) Horstman; two brothers-in-law, Gary Wielenga and Ernest (wife, Jeanette) Wielenga; and a sister-in-law, Marietta (husband, Henry) Mulder.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Jerry Wielenga; a sister, Betty Mouw; four sisters-in-law, Jean, Joan, Gert, and Arloa Vande Brake; and two brothers-in-law, Ran Gunderson and Ken Mouw.
