Obituary: Rock Valley, IA: Clarence Statema, 90, of Rock Valley, died Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at Whispering Heights, Rock Valley. Memorial Service 11 am Monday at Calvin Christian Reformed Church, Rock Valley. Burial prior at 10 am at Valley View Cemetery. Visitation with family 2-4 pm Sunday at Porter Funeral Home, Rock Valley.
Clarence was born August 23, 1921 near Ireton, IA, son of Peter and Anna (Jansma) Statema. He married Beulah Bonnema at Ireton, IA on April 4, 1946. To this union, two children were born, Gene and Darrel. Clarence served in the US Army from 1942 to 1946 in the Southern Pacific. He was manager of Bi-State Fertilizer in Hawarden for many years until they retired to Rock Valley. Clarence was a member of the Calvin Christian Reformed Church and had served as an Elder. In the past, he served many years as elder, deacon, and on the Christian School Board. Clarence enjoyed retirement years golfing and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He became a resident of Whispering Heights 7 months ago.
Survivors are his wife, Beulah; sons Gene (Karen) Statema of Rock Valley, Darrel (Tiletta) Statema of Sioux Falls, SD; 7 grandchildren, Jason (Becky) Statema, Jamison (Julie) Statema, Dan (Karla) Statema, Ben (Ashley) Statema, Susan (John) Kooi, Laura (Shawn) Van Zee, Nanci (Brad) Grevengoed; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Geneva (William) Burggraaf of Rock Valley, Priscilla (Otto) Huizenga of Orange City, IA; sisters-in-law, Iola Statema of Zeeland, MI, Bertha Statema of Ireton, IA; in-laws, Melvin (Gertie) Bonnema, Elmer (Artie) Bonnema all of Sioux Center, IA, Harold (Millie) Bonnema of Seal Beach, CA.
Clarence was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Art, Frank, and Peter Statema; three sisters, Ann Zomermaand, Betty Sikma, and Madelyn Huizinga.
