From the Alton Democrat of April 9, 1898 listing
From The Hawarden Republican.
One of the most terrible accidents that has ever happened in this section befell the little six year old daughter Eva, of Mr. and Mrs. Fred arle,
living nine miles-southeast of Hawarden, last Saturday afternoon. The little girl and brother, seven years old, were out in the field where, thier father was at work. They started for him and before they reached the house they were attracted to a neighboring field where a prairie fire had been started. Undoubtedly, while plying with the fire the little girl's clothing caught fire. The little brother tried hard to put out the fire, and the little girl started to run across the field to her father, but she did not run far before she fell to the ground. Mr. Earle noticed a fire in the field and hurried to the place, only to find his little girl burned almost to a crisp. She was removed to the house and medical assistance quickly summoned, but the little sufferer was so badly burned that she died Sunday morning at five o'clock. The funeral was held Monday.
