STROKE FATAL TO A PIONEER OF HAWARDEN
H. H. Elmitt Had Lived Here Over Sixty Years
Was Employed Over Forty Years By The North Western Railroad; Funeral Held On Sunday

H. H. Elmitt, a pioneer resident of Hawarden, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sam Blair, at 2 o'clock last Friday morning [Feb. 4], following a stroke. While he had been in failing health for some time, he was up about until last Thursday, when he suffered a stroke from which he did not regain consciousness.

Funeral services were held at the Barnard Funeral home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, with Rev. W. V. Bell of the Methodist church in charge. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.

Herbert Henry Elmitt was born in Tattershell, England, November 21, 1864, and passed away in Hawarden February 4, 1944, at 79 years, 2 months and 13 days. He came to America when 17 years of age and for a short time he lived in Wisconsin. When he first came to Hawarden in 1862, he was employed on the farm by W. T. and L. H. Searle and later he was bookkeeper for the Queal Lumber company. He was employed by the North Western Railroad company in Hawarden for over 40 years, retiring a number of years ago because of ill health.

He was married to Catheryn Staley at Elk Point 52 years ago and she preceded him in death August 26, 1937. He leaves to mourn his death two daughters and three sons, Wm. T. Elmitt of Huron, S.D.; George Elmitt of Sioux Rapids; Mrs. Mabel Madsen of Pocahontas, Iowa; Mrs. Anna I. Blair of Hawarden and Arthur Elmitt of Chadron, Neb.

During his long service with the North Western Railroad company, Mr. Elmitt was a loyal employee and honest with his fellow men. He was a member of the Congregational church and in his younger days was a member of the choir.

Out of town relatives who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. S. Madsen and daughter, Alta, of Pocahontas, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Madsen and family of Laurens, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Madsen of Palmer, George Elmitt and son and Mrs. John Williams of Sioux Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. T. Elmitt of Huron, S.D., and Arthur L. Elmitt of Chadron, Neb.
