Joel F. Burnight of Chatsworth Dies at Age 55

Joel F. "Mike" Burnight, 55, of Chatsworth died last Friday morning [Feb. 9] following a heart attack.

Mr. Burnight carried the mail between the post office and depot at Chatsworth and last Friday morning shortly before 9 he left his home to get the mail at the post office. He had gone but a short distance when he felt ill and stopped at the Henry Satthoff home where he died shortly after.

Funeral services were held at 10 o'clock Monday morning in St. Mary's church in Hawarden with Rev. Fr. R. Graf officiating. Rosary was said Sunday evening in the home at Chatsworth. Burial was in St. Mary's cemetery under the direction of the Frazier Funeral home. The Veterans of Foreign Wars of Hawarden had charge of the military rites. Pall bearers were George Moohelman, Wm. Schwiesow, Robert Johannsen, Henry Lyle, Orville Jurgenson and Clifford Montang.

Mr. Burnight was born near Akron August 13, 1895. He spent his entire life in Chatsworth and vicinity. He was a veteran of World War I, having served overseas. He was a member of the V.F.W. and St. Mary's church of Hawarden.

He was married to Miss Nellis Jepsen of Chatsworth July 14, 1923. To this union were born two sons, one of whom, James, died in 1936.

Survivors are the widow and a son, Donald, at home; three brothers and two sisters, Henry and William of Chatsworth and Charles of Sioux City and Mrs. Lawrence Gibbons of Akron and Mrs. Margaret Schafer of Hawarden.

Relatives and friends who attended the rosary and funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Tom Burnight, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Burnight, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Burnight, Mrs. Madeline Vander Hamm and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Knapp Lamoreaux, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Vander Hamm, Mrs. Josephine Adams, Mrs. Louis Schumacher, Mrs. B. W. Dalgliesh, Mrs. Kathryn Talley, Sam McMaster and Bon Dorthery, all of Sioux City.

Mr. and Mrs. Ras Rasmussen of Elk Point, Mr. and Mrs. E. Paskert of Remsen, Mr. and Mrs. Hawks and Mr. and Mrs. Jack McInnis of Westfield, Mrs. Forrest Ericson, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ludwig and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Ludwig of Alcester, Ole Olson of Seneca, S.D., Mr. and Mrs. Albert Sorenson and son, Mr. and Mrs. Orrin Anderson and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. Milbrodt of Hinton, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Gibbons, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Gibbons, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Burnight, Jim Traut and John McInnis of Akron, Ed Koppert of Alton and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Lamoreaux of Sheldon.
