Hull Index of April 16, 1897
On Tuesday afternoon of this week, the remains of Jane E. Wilcox, whose maiden name was Smith, were quietly laid to rest in Hope cemetery. Mrs. Wilcox was born at Pottersville, Warren Co., New York, in 1834. March 18th 1852 she was married to Thomas L. Wilcox, whose death occurred Aug 2nd, 1888. Seven children, four sons and three daughters were born unto their union, five of whom survive their parents namely: T. W. and H. L. Wilcox, Mrs. Myron Fell of Malone NY, Mrs. E. H. Smith, formerly at Hull, Hornellsville NY, and Mrs. Collin Anderson of Hull, who with Harry, reside on the old homestead.
In 1877, the deceased came with her husband and family from Potsdam NY, to Sioux County, and has made this county her home continuously, only as she visited from time to time among her children. Mrs. Wilcox has been for over twenty five years a devoted member of the Episcopal church, and by her many acts of kindness among neighbors in their hours of their distress, has shown that her christian character was built up with noble and practical illustrations of what a christian character should be. Rev. W.L. Brandt, pastor of the Congregational church at Doon, preached a most touching sermon at the Congregational church at Hull, and from what he had gleaned from neighbors and friends of the deceased, he was able to dwell at considerable length on the beautiful and self sacrificing life of this devoted mother.
The death of Mrs. Wilcox occurred on Saturday night, the announcement of which was a shock to the whole community on account of the deceased being struck down, to all appearance in perfect health, the cause of death being heart failure.
The sympathy of the entire community go out for the bereft children, especially the two daughters who live in the far east.
