Paul Dean, age 86, of Sioux Falls, died Wednesday, August 20, 2004 at Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls.
Paul Dean owned and published the Rock Valley Bee and the Inwood Herald for eleven years from 1953 to 1964. In that time he and his wife Doris made many friends in the area and continued to keep in contact with many.
Paul was born in Sioux Falls, January 22, 1917 and moved as a small child with his family to Pittsburgh, PA, where he received his elementary education, returning to Sioux Falls in 1932 to attend Washington High School. He then entered military service and served in the Navy during WWII, serving most of the war in the Pacific where he earned 13 battle stars. During that time, the aircraft carriers he was on were torpedoed twice. He received his honorable discharge in 1945 and returned to Sioux Falls.
On February 26, 1943, he was united in marriage with Doris Henegar in Philadelphia. Upon returning to Sioux Falls, Paul attended South Dakota State University where he received his degree in journalism. He was also homecoming chairman at the SDSU in 1949.
Paul worked for the Redfield Press and the Brookings Register. He later bought two weekly newspapers in Iowa (The Rock Valley Bee and the Inwood Herald). After selling these newspapers, he worked for the March of Dimes National Foundation as State Representative. Most recently, he worked as an information officer for the United States Dept. of Agriculture. He retired from there in 1982. After retirement Paul was employed as a starter for Elmwood Golf Course.
Paul was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge, was a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of El Riad Shrine.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Doris of Sioux Falls, SD; two daughters, Debby Anderson and Kim Pearson and her husband Chris, both of Sioux Falls; one son, Douglas Dean and his wife, Pamela, also of Sioux Falls; his brother, Alfred Dean and his wife, Helen, of Grants Pass, OR; and 4 grandchildren, Jennifer Anderson, Heidi Dean, Ali Pearson and Andrew Pearson. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lloyd and Lester.
