Clara Bell Dean, daughter of Albert & Mary Dean, a prominent pioneer family of Sioux County, was born at De Witt, Clinton County, Iowa, August 8, 1869 and died at her home in Boyden, Jan. 11, 1950, aged 80 years, 5 months and 5 days.

When she was two years of age she came with her parents, one brother Alex, and her grandfather and grandmother, in a covered wagon and settled on a farm south of Boyden. This farm was granted to her father for his service during the Civil War.

The early years as settlers in this country were filled with hardships and privations. Their first home being a sod home. Several years after the death of their mother in 1905, the father, sister Evelyn and Clara moved to Boyden.

Clara was a faithful member of the Free Grace Methodist Church of Boyden until it disbanded and since was a faithful member of the United Presbyterian Church and a life member of the Ladies Aid Society until her health made it impossible for her to attend the meetings.

Nine years ago she suffered a stroke and five years ago she fell and broke her hip which caused her much suffering and pain which she bore so uncomplainely. The fullness of her life was expressed in her love for everyone.

She leaves to mourn her death, three sisters, Nelly (Mrs. John Veenscholten) of Des Moines, IA., Sadie (Mrs. Chas. Hoffa) of Pequot, IA and Evelyn of Boyden, and one brother George Dean of Nashua, IA. Also nieces and nephews and a host of friends, and two brothers preceded her in death.
