Funeral services for Joe Reekers, 73, of Sheldon, who passed away Thursday, May 17, at his home after a long illness, were held Monday, May 21, at 1:30 P.M., in the First Reformed Church in Sheldon. Rev. Herman Harmelink of Archer and Rev. William B. Miller of the Bethel Reformed Church officiated.
Mrs. Henry Van Beek was the organist. A men's quartet composed of Cornie DeHoogh, John DeHoogh, Eugene Hofmeyer and Marion Dykshorn sang "Lily of the Valley" and "How Great Thou Art".
Pallbearers were grandchildren: Alan Reekers, Michael Reekers, David Reekers, Bob Buchanan, Dan Smith and Joe Williams. Burial was in the East Lawn Cemetery with the Andringa Funeral Home of Sheldon in charge of the funeral arrangements.
Mr. Reekers was born January 22, 1900 at Hospers, a son of Mr. & Mrs. Art Reekers. He lived near Sheldon and Hospers and attended the country school. On Oct. 29, 1924 he was united in marriage to Martha G. Nagel at Boyden.
They farmed near Sheldon following their marriage until 1947 when they retired and moved to Sheldon, making their home at 1154 East 11th Street. Mr. Reekers was a member of the First Reformed Church.
Survivors are his wife, Martha, three sons, Arthur and George and Merle, all of Sheldon, eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters, Tena, Mrs. William Struyk of Long Beach, CA; Jennie, Mrs. John Kleinwolterink of Hull; Mary, Mrs. Bert Van Roekel of Sheldon; Nell, Mrs. Otto Pekelder of San Diego, CA, and Gert, Mrs. Jake Douma of Sheldon; and two brothers, John Reekers of Matlock and Art Reekers of Oceanside, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Arie & Henry and one grandson, Bryan Joe Reekders.
