Hawarden, IowaObituary: Hawarden, Iowa- James Peter Skogman, 91, of Hawarden, passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2011.
Memorial service will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Hawarden with Pastor Stuart Schreur officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and VFW. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. Friday, with a Masonic Service by the Jeptha Lodge #121 at 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service all at the First Baptist Church.
James Peter Skogman was born in Union County, South Dakota, west of Chatsworth, Iowa on December 10, 1919 to Peter and Maud (Hendricks) Skogman. He grew up in the Chatsworth and Hawarden areas and graduated from Hawarden High School in 1937. He entered the Army on March of 1942 and served his country in World War II in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. James was honorably discharged from the Army in October of 1945 and returned to Hawarden.
In July of 1950 James was united in marriage with Dorothy Wendel and together they raised two daughters. Jim worked in natural gas pipeline construction for sixteen years throughout the United States and Canada moving Dorothy and the girls along from job to job. Jim and Dorothy then entered into the restaurant business in Hawarden for seventeen years. After retiring, they enjoyed many winters in Yuma, Arizona where they enjoyed spending time with new friends. Jim remained active in the VFW, American Legion, Masonic Lodge and Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He attended several 436th AAA AW reunions where he enjoyed spending time with his World War II comrades. Jim was especially proud of his service to his country. Dorothy and James celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2010.
Survivors include his loving wife, Dorothy, two daughters: Jan and Susan (Dan) both of Hawarden. Also left to mourn him is grandson, Brian (Kristi) Warner of Hawarden; two great-grandchildren, Kevin Warner of Sioux City and Tova Warner of Lincoln, Nebraska; two great-great grandsons, Braylon and Kason; nephew, Chuck (Elaine) Skogman of Ireton; two nieces, Norma Skogman of Hawarden and Delores (Don) Abbey of McCook, Nebraska; Trisha Warner of Sioux City; and many cousins and friends. Preceding him in death are four brothers, Alfred, Rayford, Richard, Donald; two nephews, Steve and Jerry; and his parents.
