Raymond Arie Bras was born on March 16, 1937, in Ocheyedan, Iowa. He was the son of Tunis and Agnes (Zevenbergen) Bras. He lived his youth in rural Ocheyedan and Harris, Iowa, before moving to Sibley, Iowa, with his family. He attended school in Harris, Iowa, graduating with the class of 1955. After graduating from high school Ray was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.
He was united in marriage to Mary Evelyn Fisher of Randolph, Wisconsin, on January 7, 1959, in Randolph. They lived in Sibley, Sioux City, and Sheldon, Iowa, where Ray was employed by Northwestern Bell, U.S. West and Qwest, telephone companies. He retired in 1998, after working for 42 years. In March of 2011, Ray and Mary moved to Hull, Iowa.
Ray was a member of the Protestant Reformed Church in Hull, Iowa, since 1996. He was a former member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Sheldon, Iowa, where he served as an elder and deacon.
Ray enjoyed all sports and watching his grandkids play sports. He especially enjoyed horse showing, fishing, trapping, hunting and teaching the art of trapping and hunting. He enjoyed fishing with his special friend, Andy Greenfield. He also enjoyed his dog "Bud". Family vacations were a special time for him.
He was a member of the Sioux County Sportsman’s Club and Ray was honored to receive the Legendary Sportsman Award.
As Ray’s illness progressed, he loved to have Mary and his children read the Bible to him, every evening.
Ray passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2011, at the Prairie View Home in Sanborn, Iowa.
Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 52 years: Mary Bras of Hull, IA; his son and daughter-in-law: Doug and Shara Bras of Hinton, IA; two daughters and sons-in-law: Lori Anne and Craig Osland of Sheffield, IA, Michelle Rae and Dennis Hoksbergen of Hull, IA; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Marilyn Ruth and Melvin Brouwer of Orange City, IA, Verla Jean Elgersma of Sanborn, IA.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; brother: Lloyd Robert Bras; granddaughter: Shelby Joy Hoksbergen; brother-in-law: Gerald Elgersma
