Gertrude "Babe" Heemskerk Reimers, the daughter of Leen and Anna (Bell) Heemskerk was born April 18, 1914 in Hull, Iowa. She moved with her parents to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1916 for a year. In 1917 they moved back to Hull, where Gertrude was raised and received her education. From 1930 – 1940 she worked as a telephone operator in Hull. She was united in marriage to Roy C. Reimers on May 15, 1940 in Pender, Nebraska. After their marriage the couple made their home in rural Boyden, Iowa. Gertrude was a homemaker and helped her husband on the farm for years. She worked as a waitress for six years at Beckman's Cafe' in Hull, and worked at Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon from 1979 -1989 as a custodian. She also worked with the Capel Township Christmas Seal Organization for 5 years. Roy preceded her in death on November 5, 1996 in Sheldon, Iowa. She remained on the home place until becoming a resident of the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull, Iowa in June of 2009. Gertrude passed away at the care center on Tuesday, April 26, 2011 reaching the age of 97 years, and 8 days.
Gertrude was a member of the American Reformed Church in Hull, and a member of the Ladies Aide at the United Presbyterian Church in Boyden. She enjoyed raising dogs which she showed nationally, she also raised and sold German Shepherds to Hollywood. Gertrude enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved going for rides in the car especially to the Lakes, and eating out! Dairy Dandy being her main stop! She would also sit for hours playing cards with family, neighbors and whoever couldn't outsmart her thriftiness.
Gertrude leaves to cherish her memory her two children, Ronald Reimers of Boyden, Iowa; and Becky Rozeboom of Sioux Center, Iowa; six grandchildren, Chad (Amanda) Rozeboom, Tiffany (Neal) Wurth, Krysten Rozeboom (fiancé, Chance Haan), Nathan Rozeboom (fiancé, Brooke Sundberg), Cindy Steele, Jason (Wendy) Reimers; eleven great-grandchildren, Dylan, Austin and Brooklyn Rozeboom; Gage and Addilynn Haan; Dakotah, Shayla and Dylan Steele; Hunter, Kayla and Kalea Reimers and 3 step great-grandchildren, Taylor, Alex and Dennis; and numerous relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Roy; her parents, four sisters, Ada Droog, Floretta Beckman, Henrietta Koele and Maxine Taminga; and a brother in infancy.
