1-7-1920 -26-11-2003Arnolda M. De Groot, 83, Sioux Center, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 26, at Sioux Center Community Hospital Nursing Facility.
Services were Monday, Dec. 1, at Covenant Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center with the Rev. Herman Van Niejenhuis officiating. Burial was at Hills of Rest Memorial Park in Sioux Falls, SD, under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Arnolda De Groot daughter and oldest of eight childrten of Henry and Alida Ruys, was born July 1, 1920. Her family settled in Sioux Falls, SD, in 1923. Except for a few years in other towns, Sioux Falls remained her home for 46 years. She graduated from Sioux Falls Washington High School in 1938 and worked as a beautician and clerk at Fantles Department Store.
She married Henry J De Groot of Orange City in 1941. They had four children between 1950 and 1958-- two sons born in Fort Doidge (one died in infancy) and two daughters born in Sioux Falls, They moved too Sioux Center in 1969 when her husband took a position as professor of business administration at Dordt College. After he retired, they moved to Park Forest, IL, while her daughter-in-law attended medical school. While in Illinois, she developed a keen interest in quilting, which stayed with her the rest of her life.
During her years in Sioux Falls, she served as an organist and was an active member of First Christian Reformed Church, a congregation that her father helped to organize. She and her husband were members of First Christian Reformed Church for several years and later helped to start Covenant Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. She was a member of the Siouxland Quilters and occasionally displayed quilts at local events. In their retirement years, the couple enjoyed trips to Tucson,AZ, Smithers, British Columbia,Canada, and Edina, MN. She served as a member of the Sioux Center Community Hospital Women's Auxiliary for many years.
Survivors include her husband, Henry De Groot of Sioux Center; three children, David and Irene De Groot of Grand Rapids, MI., Ruth and Lewis Marshall of Edina, MN., and Janna and Ron Van Driel of Smithers, Britiah Columbia, Canada; eight grandchildren two great grandchildren; and a sister Reona Reinsma of Woodlawn Park, CO.
She was preceded in death by a son Calvin De Groot; and a sister, Alicelouise. Memorials may be directed to Dordt College in Sioux Center
