DEATH CLAIMS D. MAC KINNON
Former Hawarden Resident Died at LeMars Monday Morning
Donald MacKinnon, a pioneer resident of Iowa and for forty years a citizen of Hawarden, passed away Monday at his home in LeMars from heart trouble and complications due to his advanced age.
Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Plymouth Presbyterian church at Crathorne at 2:30 with Rev. T. C. Seibert, the pastor, and Rev. T. H. Harding of Hawarden, in charge. interment was made - in Crathorne cemetery.
Donald MacKinnon was born at Inverness, Quebec province, Canada, September 15, 1850, so was past 89 years of age at the time of his death.
He was a son of Donald MacKinnon and Mary Sillers and was the sixth child in a family of ten. He spent his early life in Canada and came to Iowa in 1871 and. for a number of years farmed with his brother, Peter Mac Kinnon, in Plymouth county.
He was united in marriage with Miss Hattie George at Alta, Iowa, October 25, 1888, and they set up housekeeping on a farm ten miles west of LeMars. After living there six years they came to Hawarden and lived in this city for forty years. They returned to LeMars four years ago to be near their daughters. Mrs. Mac Kinnon preceded her husband in death June 16, 1939. Since the death of his wife his daughter, Mrs. Jessie Thomas, made her home with him and cared for him. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. Ralph Marcue of LeMars, one son, William D. MacKinnon of Des Moines, and one brother, James MacKinnon of Inverness, Canada, and four grandchildren.
Mr. MacKinnon was a carpenter and for many years followed this trade in Hawarden. He was of the sturdy pioneer type and endured the hardships of the early settlers of this country. He was upright in his dealings with his fellowmen and many of his old time friends in Hawarden will regret to learn of his passing.
