Frank de Haas,78, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, Dec.19 at the Orange City Hospital Clinic.The funeral services will be on Thursday Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Donald De Glopper will be officiating. Interment will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Van-Etten-Oolman-VanGelder Funeral Home, Orange City.
Frank was born Jan. 5, 1916 in Orange City, the son of Titus "Tony" and Hendrika J. (Toering) de Haas. While still a youth, his family moved to a farm in the Ozarks, near Harrison, Ark. There he developed a deep love for the outdoors, spending his leisure time hiking,camping, studying nature, fishing and hunting. He also aquired a keen and lasting interest in all types of sporting firearms. For many years, he was a contributing editor to the "American Rifleman", the magazine of the National Rifle Association, where he answered questions for readers, with the assistance of his wife. Many readers referred to him as "Mr.Single Shot". He married Katie G. Vander Well on Oct. 23, 1940 in Rock Valley. He was a long time member of the Trinity Reformed Church and a life member or the National Rifle Association
Among those who survive are his wife; a son and his wife, Mark and Linda de Haan of Brooklyn,MO; a daughter and her husband, Judi and George Burgers of Yankton,SD., five grandchildren; two brothers and their wives Edward and Margaret de Haas of Rock Valley; and Newman and Betty de Haas of Silver Spring, MD., a sister Griselda Jacobs of Prairie City. and nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
