Passed away Wednesday at Home in Sioux City.
Was Pioneer Homesteader in this vicinity and carried Mail on Star Routes for many years.
Chas. Mitchell, one of the pioneer residents of this community, passed away at 10:30 Wednesday morning at this home in Sioux City. He had been in failing health since last May but had only been bedfast for about ten days prior to his death.
Chas. Mitchell was born Sept. 23, 1847, so was just a few days past 78 years of age. He came to this section in the 70's and homesteaded in Union County SD. just a few miles west of Calliope. He was untied in marriage on Sept 1, 1872 with Nancy Ophelia Hubbard whose death occurred while they were still residing on their homestead on Oct 23, 1881. From this union two daughters survive, Mrs. Harry Hilton of Hawarden and Mrs. Will Reynolds of Gooing ID. Following the death of his wife in 1881 Mr. Mitcheel moved to Calliope with is children and was later united in marriage with Eliza Mann, who survives him. For many years Mr. Mitchell was a mail carrier on star routes operating between Hawarden and Big Springs, Spink and Garland, in Union County. He also carried mail during this time from the Northwestern depot in Hawarden to the Calliope postoffice until the latter office was discontinued. When rural free delivery service was instituted the star routes from Hawarden and Union county points were abolished and Mrs. Mitchell ceased to be an employee of the government. Thirteen years ago Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell moved to Sioux City aand have continued to make their home there, During the past seven or eigth years he had been totally blind.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.
