Death follows long illness from heart trouble.
Was not Quite 57 years old and had served as Assistant Postmaster Here for 23, Years.
Roy E. Miller, an almost lifelong resident of Hawarden and for the past twenty-three years assistant postmaster here, died at his home in this city shortly before 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon from valvular heart trouble and complications. He had been in ill health for the past years and a half and had been obliged during this period to take sick leave from his duties in the post office on several occasions, returning to duty only at intervals. Some time ago he was granted a six months leave of absence and had set earnestly about the business of recuperating his health. He was quite ill for a time during the winter and sping but had progressed to the extent that early in June he went to Hot Spring SD., where he spent a month at the home of his sister. Returning a few weeks ago he again became critically ill upon arrival home and was cared for at the Hawarden hospital for a time but upon his insistence was removed to his home with a trained nurse in attendance. Last week he appeared to rally considerably but suffered a sinking spell Sunday morning and grew steadily weaker until death claimed him.
Funeral sevices were held at his home at 2 o'clock and at the Associated church at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon with Rev. T. H. Harding in charge. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery with members of Masonic order conducting their ritualistic burial service at the grave.
Roy Ernest Miller was the eldest chld of James C. and Ida Miller. He was born at Dexter, IA, Aug 11, 1878 so was not quite 57 years of age at the time of his death. In 1880 at the age of 2 years he moved with his parents to Calliope and subsequently to Hawarden and this city has ever since continued to be his home although he was absent and employed elsewhere for brief periods during his early manhood. He attended the Hawarden schools and was amember of one of the early high school graduating classes the class of 1894. Following this graduation from high school he was employed for a considerable number of years in various Hawarden mercantile establishments, and for a year or two managed a genearl store at Akron of J. P. Lind. Later he spent a year or rwo as a special sales manager, traveling from city ot city throughout the west. Returning to Hawarden he entered the employ of B. J. Hyink and for several years had charge of the dry goods department in Mr. Hyink's store. In 1912 following a Civil Service examination he was appointed to the position of assistant postmaster in Hawarden office and continued in this positon until his death.
He was united in marriage with Miss Grace Bristol in Hawarden on Jan 22, 1908, and they immidiately went to housekeeping here. One daughter, Mrs. Bernice Schiefen was born to them. Mrs. Miller passed away here April 11, 1926.
Besides his daughter, Mrs. Schiefen, he is survivied by three brothers, Frank D. Miller of Cedar Rapids, John C. Miller of Tyndall SD, and Ted F. Miller of Hawarden, and one sister, Mr. Frank J. Richter of Hot Springs SD.
Mr. Miller was a long time member of the local Masonic and Estern Star lodges and took an active interest in lodge affairs. Having served a couple of years ago as Master of Dale Lodge. He was also a member of the Associated church.
