Mrs. J. C. Miller, for thirty-eight years a resident of this city, passed away at her home here at 3:40 Tuesday afternoon following an illness which has extended over the past two years. Although she had been quite poorly for some time it was not realized that the end was so near and her death came as a distinct shock to her family and many old friends. She had been feeling rather better than usual Tuesday morning but shortly after dinner she suffered a sinking spell and a physician was summoned. She apparently recovered from the sinking spell and had been conversing with members of the family for some time when she suddenly expired. Funeral services will be held Friday afternon at 2:30 at the Methodist church, in charge of the pastor, Rev. W. A. Winterstein, and interment will be in the family plot in Grace Hill cemetery.
Ida L. May was born near Delevan IL., May 3, 1858, so lacked just 8 days of being 64 years of age. Her parents died when she was about 10 years of age and until she was 17 she made her home with her grandparents. In 1875 she went to Dexter, IA, where she taught school until her marriage to James C. Miller which orccurred Jan 10, 1877. They continued to reside in Dexter for five years, moving from there to Atlantic, IA in 1882, and two years later, in the spring of 1884, locating in Calliope and her home has ever since been in this community. Her husband passed away June 4, 1918. She was the mother of six children, five of whom are left to mourn her loss. One daugheter Ruth, was killed in an accident in Idaho elven years ago. The surviving childen are Roy E. of Hawarden, Frank D. of CedarRapids Miss _____ of Hawarden, John C. of Hurley SD and Ted of Hawarden. She also is survived by one sister, Mrs. Alice Betts of Santa Monica, CA and one brother, Frank May of Kingsley IA. All of the childern and her brother, Frank May and wife, are here to attend the funeral.
