Hilda Miller, age 89 died Friday October 2, 1998 at Valley Manor Nursing Home in Rock Valley. Funeral services were Tuesday, October 6 at Peace Lutheran Church of rural Sioux Center. Rev. Dan Kordahl officiated. Burial was at Peace Lutheran Cemetery. Vistation was at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.
Hilda Miller was born March 28, 1909 at a farm south of Rock Valley in Garfield Township, daughter of John and Louisa Bauder Miller. Hilda graduated from Rock Valley High School in 1926, and stayed on there as a post graduate for a year. From 1927-1929, Hilda taught at rural schools in Sioux County. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1930 with a two year cericifate. Hilda taught 4th grade at Mitchell SD from 1931-1934. She then attended Iows State Teachers College, but this time graduated in 1935 with a B.A degree in Math and Earth Sciences. From 1935-1945, Hilda Taught math and work-type reading to grades 4-7 at Waterloo IA. In 1944, Hilda graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Hilda began teaching at Beloit WI in 1945, teaching junior high math and 9th and 10th grade math, and she continued teaching there until 1971. In 1971, Hilda moved back to Rock Valley to be with her sister, Clara. Hilda moved into the Four Seasons Apartments in 1994. Hilda was an avid bird watcher and lover; she belonged to numerous bird and habitat organizations. she was also a member of the Peace Lutheran Women's Auxiiary and Legion Ausiliary of Rock Valley.
Surviving relatives include one Brother Harold Miller of Orange City, IA; one sister-in-law Emma Miller of Rock Valley; 17 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by 7 brothers, George, Edwin, Oscar, Arthur, Harvey, Richard, Herbert; 2 sisters Mrs. Will Nellie Serch and Clara Miller; one niece, Eloise Kramer.
