Amanda Miller, age 100, died Friday January 21, 2000, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. The funeral service was held Monday, January 24, at Hudson Lutheran Chruch in Hudson, SD. Rev. Dave Christenson officiated. Burial was at the Peace Lutheran Cemetery south of Rock Valley, IA. Family visitation was held at Porter Funeral home in Hudson on Sunday from 6-7p.m. and closed with a prayer service at 7:00.
Amanda Miller was born November 22, 1899 in Lagendorf, Germany, daughter of Wilhelm and Minna Borge Schuldt. Amanda moved ot the USA with her family in 1913 and first settled in Sioux county, IA, and later moved to Humboldt, SD. She completed her final year of schooling here after a neighbor told the local school teacher that she was only 13 years old. Amanda married Frank L. Miller on December 21, 1921 in Humbloldt SD. Together they farmed southwest of Rock Valley, IA., Frank died on March 4, 1939. Amanda remained on the farm and with the help of her son, Robert, and the other children, she continued to keep the farm going. She moved into Hudson in 1953, where she began baking for the Hudson Cafe. Amanda then worked for a Sioux Falls family as a nanny and housekeeper. She then came back home to Hudson, where she opened her home to board teachers in Hudson. Amanda moved into the Colonial Manor of Hudson in 1996.
Amanda was a member of the Hudson Lutheran Church and also of the Ladies Aid of the Peace Lutheran Church of rural Sioux Center. She enjoyed gardening and quilting. She especially enjoyed having friends and family over for morning coffee and breakfast.
Surviving relatives include two sons and their wives: Raymond and Arleen Miller of Sioux Center IA, Fred and Alice Miller of Omaha, NE; Two daughters and their husbands, Elinor and Ted Quanstrom, Lois and Roy Rollings all of Hudson, SD; daughter in law Donna Miller. Amanda was preceded in death by her husband Frank; Two sons, Robert and Arnold Miller; two brothers, Ferdinand and Dick Schuldt; one sister, Adeline Miller; one grandchild.
